Community Information

Wooster, OH is located in North-central Ohio in Wayne County. The first Wooster settlers came to this area in 1807 and settled here in 1808, naming the town in honor of David Wooster, Brigadier General of the Revoluntary War. Today this is one of the more exciting area of Ohio. Growth is healthy, but orderly. The population is steadily increasing. Well-kept homes, well-groomed lawns, tree-lined streets and an award-winning downtown entice visitors to become residents.

EDUCATION

 

The Wooster public school district enrolls 4,400 students at it's six elementary schools, middle school, high school and it's special-needs school, Boys' Village. More than a fourth of the students attend the state-of-the-art high school which features a 1,000 seat performing arts hall, a 2,100 seat gymnasium, the Ellen Shapiro Natatorium and the Gault Recreation & Fitness Center. The Wayne County Schools Career Center enrolls 696 students and offers over 29 trade and skill disciplines.

Wooster also is home to three institutes of higher education. The College of Wooster is one of the finest private liberal arts colleges in the country. The Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute, the largest of it's kind, specializes in horticultural and agricultural programs. Wayne College, a branch of The University of Akron, offers associate degrees and non-credit classes.

HEALTH CARE

The Wooster Community Hospital is a 139-bed facility that provides treatment for 4,600 in-patients and 38,000 out-patients annually. The hospital has 650 employees and a medical staff of 100 physicians.

The Cleveland Clinic Wooster is a comprehensive multi-specialty medical group with access to their world class facilities and physicians.

Nursing homes in the community include: Glendora Health Care Center, Horn Nursing Home, Smithville Western Care Center, Wayne Manor and West View Manor. Retirement Centers include: College Hills Retirement Village and the Smithville Western Commons Townhouses.

13 Parks and Playgrounds, (10) movie theaters, YMCA, (4) golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, racquetball courts, fishing ponds, bowling alleys, rollerskating, ice skating, family recreation center and more!

THE AMISH

Today about 90,000 Amish live in the United States. There are approximately 25,000 Amish living in Wayne County and the adjacent counties to the south and east. They represent 83 church congregations. Many of the Amish are Old Order and the most conservative among thm live much as their predecessors did in the nineteenth century. While visitors may talk to and mingle with the Amish, please remember that these gentle friendly people are not spectacles; they are ordinary people who chose a simpler way of life. Please respect their privacy and refrain from taking photographs and trespassing.
